Research Interests:
Disentanglement of large whales and Cape fur seals from fishing gear and plastic entanglement
Investigation of marine mammal mortality events, collection of life history information and monitoring of ecosystem health
Wildlife Satellite telemetry, movement and foraging behaviour
Roles:
Member of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) Specialist Disentanglement Group on welfare issues dealing with large whales.
Operations Manager, South African Whale Disentanglement Network (SAWDN).
National & regional stranding and response co-ordinator for the Department of Environmental Affairs on cetaceans and pinnipeds through the South African National Stranding and Response network
Engaged in marine mammal research for over 40 years, with particular interest in satellite and VHF telemetry studies on cetacea, pinnipeds, seabirds and elasmobranchs.
